IRS Scam

The SLMPD has taken reports from residents after someone claiming to be from the IRS has called them stating they owe the IRS money. Be advised that this is a scam. The IRS will not call you stating you owe money.  Any correspondence with the IRS will come through the US Mail.  Our advise is to hang up on the caller.  You can also help curb financial crimes by not providing any financial information over the phone or responding to e-mails.  Scammers often target victims by sending e-mails that look like they are from financial institutions, such as banks etc..  They will also try obtaining your financial information by telephone under the guise that you won a prize of some type or trying to verify your banking information. Banks will not e-mail or call you to verify information.  Please report this information to the SLMPD if this happens to you (Posted August 3rd, 2016)
