Police Chief Position

The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department is seeking applications for the position of Chief of Police to replace the previous chief who retired after 16 year tenure in the position. The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department serves the cities of Shorewood, Excelsior, Tonka Bay and Greenwood. The department operates under a Joint Powers Agreement, originally signed in 1973, in which the chief reports to a Coordinating Committee made up of the mayors of the four cities.

Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in public safety or related field and a minimum of seven years law enforcement supervisory experience with three years at the lieutenant or command staff level. The ideal candidate will have experience in budgeting, strategic planning and community relations as well as strong leadership skills. Advanced police management training is also desirable. The ideal candidate will be innovative, well versed on modern policing issues and methods and have the ability to communicate at all levels.

Volunteer Reserve Officer Position

The SLMPD Reserve Unit is currently seeking interested applicants who meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • At least 19 years old
  • Good physical condition
  • Possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license
  • Have no felony or gross misdemeanor convictions
  • Pass an oral examination
  • Pass a background investigation
  • Successful applicants must complete the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Reserve Officer School. This requirement may be waved if applicant is currently enrolled in a law enforcement program.
